Belmopan Entry Requirements

Belmopan Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed January 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Entering Belmopan, the purpose-built capital of Belize, is a straightforward process for most travelers arriving via the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, about 70 km northeast of Belmopan. Most visitors will then continue to the capital by shuttle, rental car, or local bus along the scenic George Price Highway. The Belizean immigration process is efficient, typically taking 15–30 minutes depending on flight arrivals. Whether you're coming to explore Belmopan's lush surrounding rainforests, visit government offices, or use the city as a base to discover things to do in Belmopan and nearby Maya sites, understanding the entry rules before you travel ensures a smooth start to your trip. Always have your passport, proof of onward travel, and accommodation details (many visitors book Belmopan hotels in advance for convenience) ready for inspection. Belize maintains a welcoming visa policy that grants visa-free access to citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, most EU nations, and many Commonwealth countries. Tourism is important to the national economy, so officers are generally courteous and helpful, when travelers arrive prepared. After immigration, you’ll collect any checked bags and proceed to customs where random baggage checks are possible. Once cleared, ground transportation to Belmopan is readily available: shared shuttles, private transfers, or local buses depart every 30–60 minutes throughout most of the day.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Belize operates a tiered visa system that favors short-stay tourists from most Western countries while requiring either an e-Visa or traditional visa for a smaller set of nationalities.

Visa-Free Entry
30 days (extendable in-country for a fee)

Travelers arriving for tourism may enter without a visa.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Germany France Netherlands Italy Spain Ireland Sweden Denmark Norway Finland Belgium Austria Switzerland Japan South Korea Mexico CARICOM member states

Passport must be valid for at least six months beyond date of entry and have one blank page for the entry stamp. Extensions cost BZ$50 per month at any Immigration & Nationality Department office.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days

Nationals of certain countries must obtain an online e-Visa before travel.

Includes
India China Philippines South Africa Pakistan Bangladesh Nigeria Ghana Vietnam Sri Lanka
How to Apply: Apply at the Belize Immigration & Nationality Department website (immigration.gov.bz). Upload passport bio-page, onward ticket, proof of accommodation (e.g., confirmation email from one of the Belmopan hotels), and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
Cost: USD 50 per adult, USD 25 per child under 12

Print the approval letter and carry it together with your passport. If transiting through another country, ensure their visa/entry rules are met separately.

Visa Required
30 days (single-entry) or 6 months (multiple-entry)

Citizens of a handful of countries must obtain a visa in advance from a Belizean embassy or consulate.

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at the nearest Belizean diplomatic mission (e.g., Washington, London, or Guatemala City). Provide passport, completed application form, recent photo, bank statements, and hotel booking or invitation letter.

Processing can take up to 10 business days. The list of restricted nationalities is small—always consult the latest list from immigration.gov.bz before applying.

Arrival Process

Upon landing at BZE, expect a four-stage arrival flow: disembarkation → immigration → baggage claim → customs → ground transport.

1
Immigration Queue
Present passport, completed embarkation form, and, if applicable, e-Visa letter. Officers may ask purpose of visit and length of stay.
2
Baggage Claim
Collect checked bags from carousels and proceed to customs. Free luggage carts are available.
3
Customs Inspection
Choose the red (declare) or green (nothing to declare) channel. Random bag checks are common.
4
Exit to Transportation
Once cleared, exit into the arrivals hall where you’ll find counters for rental cars, shared shuttles (USD 35–45 per person to Belmopan hotels), and taxi stands.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Fill out the embarkation card in full on the plane to speed up the queue.
Have your hotel address and phone number written down; cell coverage is good in the arrivals area.
If planning to stay beyond 30 days, mention at the border so the officer can guide you on extension procedures.

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is not mandatory but highly recommended, as medical evacuation costs can be high. Many Belmopan hotels can recommend local clinics, and major policies with global coverage are accepted at Belize Medical Associates.

Current Health Requirements: As of January 2024, Belize has lifted all COVID-19 entry restrictions (no tests, quarantine, or vaccination proof). Check the Belize Tourism Board (travelbelize.org) for any sudden policy changes before departure.
