Helpful Tips
Grab the shared taxi vans at Market Square terminal for cheap rides to nearby towns like San Ignacio and Dangriga. They leave when full. Expect loud music. Worth it.
Download the Belize Ride app for booking registered taxis with fixed rates around Belmopan. No haggling. Safe. Works at night.
Walk or bike the Ring Road loop to reach most government buildings and schools without needing transport. Shade is scarce. Bring water.
Ask for the "regular bus" (not express) at the main terminal to save money on trips to Belize City. Slower. Cheaper. Locals love it.
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed 'airport taxis' wait outside the terminal and quote inflated flat rates to downtown Belmopan. Insist on using the official taxi stand inside the arrivals hall where fares are regulated and drivers display permits.
Currency-exchange booths at the airport advertise 'no commission' but bury a poor exchange rate in the fine print. Compare the offered rate against the mid-market rate on your phone before handing over cash.
Baggage porters sometimes demand a per-bag fee that exceeds the customary tip. Agree on a total amount before they touch your luggage or simply wheel your own bags, the terminal is compact and distances are short.
